3G Mobile Growth - What's Happening With 3G Mobile?

The 3G mobile space is changing too. 3G operators are constantly not only developing new handsets and devices, but the networks are changing. For instance in late 2009 there was a joining of forces between major European 3G operators in France, Holland and Britain creating Britain's largest 3G mobile operator, T-mobile.

There have been other recent developments - from Verizon's increased 3G service to RadioShack selling the Apple iPhone in selected stores - all of which serve to increase the huge and rapidly growing penetration of 3G mobile.

Many of these 3G mobile changes involve better network coverage, better penetration of the market in various localities and better customer service.

There are also heightened strategies being used by suppliers to increase 3g mobile usage.  For instance, China Telecom in Beijing increased its subsidies for users who buy its 3G mobile phones from the previous 30% to 70%.

The other major change occurring with 3G mobile is advertising. This has been a much-touted development but the development of the Apple iPhone and the huge success of the Apple App Store has created a new opportunity for online (mobile) marketers to step up their efforts in the 3G mobile space.

There has already been considerable success with 3G mobile advertising by such companies as Volkswagen, who have launched their new GTI model via 3G mobile.  This is a trend that is only going to continue as 3g mobile becomes even more powerful and prevalent as smart phones and increased 3G capability means the online advertising will take off.

Using 3G Mobile The New Way

It seems that every day more people are adopting 3G devices to do much more than merely make telephone calls or undertake text messaging.  They are using their 3G handsets to play games, play videos and - most of all - to surf the net.  The 3G game is changing and changing fast.
3G mobile applications are increasingly seeing web-browsing as a key feature of the use of 3G handsets.  In Japan, for instance, a reported 85 per cent of 3G mobile users are actually using their phones or handsets to browse the web and this is a trend that is going to catch on with other countries and very soon.

Some experts say that Japan is around five years ahead of most other countries in its use of 3G mobile devices.  If that is true, then it truly gives us a good insight into what we are all going to be using our 3G phones for in future.

For instance, if you look at the use of payment cards that can be topped up with cash you will find that most countries, including the United States and United Kingdom, are using such cards for public travel and other uses only sparingly.  However in Japan the cards can be inserted into the back of 3G mobile devices and be used to pay for anything from a cup of coffee to a magazine to a train trip.  The phones can be waved across a sensor and the device will be read and funds spent.

According to Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, there are some staggering figures relating to 3G mobile use.  For instance, the number of Japanese using 3g mobile devices for web browsing reached 75 million in 2008, and in just one month in 2009 - March - over 91 million subscribed to mobile internet services. That amounts to about 85% of the country's 107 million mobile users. By contrast, in the UK, that figure is just over seven million 3g mobile users, being about 10% of the market.

These figures do not mean that 3g mobile users in the United States, UK or anywhere else are not growing quickly.  In fact they are now growing up to ten times faster than internet use on the PC.  The iphone and other 3g mobile deviceds have simply hastened the use of 3g mobile devices towards web browsing and related applications.

 
 

Opportunities in the 3G Mobile Phone Arena

The rise of the 3G phone has created a wealth of opportunity for 3g mobile phone manufacturers, but it has also unleashed a whole gamut of opportunity for 3g phone developers - from advertisers and online games developers, to network operators, software developers, service and special app facilitators.  The 3G phone world is dynamic and continuing to evolve and develop daily.

The sheer range and style of 3g phones continues to astound. The Apple iPhone really changed the game, but other manufacturers continue to develop and extend the 3g phones they bring to the market.

For instance, some users are no longer interested in GSM phones because they now have limited capability compared to what can be obtained via more modern 3g phones.  And 3G HSDPA connectivity is not always available either, which limits their application in terms of remaining online. However, we mustn't forget that there are entire countries that do not yet have 3g phones.

Aside from the 16X digital zoom, the X10 comes with auto-focus, image stabilization, smile detection, and touch focus. Intelligent software can recognize up to five faces in any photo and automatically match them with contacts in the phonebook.

And 3G phone growth continues - particularly in Asia where in China alone, 3g mobile operator China Unicom expects to boost the number of people using its 3g phones by one million new users a month with the introduction of the Apple iPhone.

The company already has over one million 3g phone users in what is the biggest cell phone market in the world.

Battles In 3G Phone Design

The patent battle between 3g phone developers Nokia and Apple helps demonstrate the intensity of the war in the 3g phone world where competitive edge is everything.  The stakes are high in the multi-billion dollar 3g phone market with new models arriving to muscle out other rivals for the growing armies of 3g phone users worldwide.

The next anticipated "iPhone killer" is the Motorola Droid, and the focus is presumably Apple's iPhone, although there are doubts about just what is the "cool" 3G phone that is the one to have in the smart phone market.

Nokia for instance have done very well with their phone sales worldwide and remain a dominant player in the 3G phone market with their range and their R&D work.  It leads the sector with almost 40 per cent market share, a huge share of a huge market.  They maintain their pre-eminence in the 3g phone market with their E71 and N97 handsets.  They have been very popular in Europe, although sales have been considerably slower in the United States.

After Nokia, according to research firm IDC, the next major 3G phone competitor is Research in Motion, who make the Blackberry and who have a 19 per cent share of the market, followed by Apple with just over 17 per cent.  Apple's sales have not been as high on the international market as they have domestically although RIM have increased their sales by over 35 per cent compared to the 2008 figures.

Overall there was a 4.2 per cent increase in smartphone (3g phone) sales during the 2009 year.

The fact is that 3g phones' growth continues exponentially although they currently only make up about 15 per cent of the mobile handset market internationally.  Many of the major, Tier 1 carriers in the US are relying on smartphone sales to pull them out of the recession even though revenues have dipped due to the economic crisis.

The anticipated growth in 2010 is expected to be very high and will easily reach beyond the sales revenue from standard mobile phones by 2012, according to research.  In part the higher growth comes from the development of high-speed packet access in Europe, the United States and in Asia-Pacific.

The 3g phone revolution shows no sign of slowing.

D2’s mCUE converged communications client with vPort embedded VoIP engine powers and the ECS T371 mobile device, based on the OMAP-3430 processor from Texas Instruments, is being combined with Beceem’s BCSM250 WiMAX modem, a high performance beast, for a solution that can quickly develop and deliver mobile devices to market, including ones utilizing theAndroid ( News - Alert) OS.
 
Also this week, VoX Communications made headlines with the announcement that is plans to offer a mobile VoIP unlimited data and voice plan in the U.S.
 
Available without any annual contracts, customers also receive get features such as nationwide 3G coverage, unlocked HTC Touch Pro II GSM smartphone, unlimited U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico calling and unlimited texting, email & Internet access.
 
AudioCodes also launched a new VMAS offering this week. A mobile VoIP solution, VMAS includes a client management system and various mobile soft clients from differing operating systems and smartphones.
